Madison Whatley is a South Florida poet and 2023 graduate of Florida International University's MFA program in Creative Writing, where she was the Managing Editor of Gulf Stream Magazine. Her poetry has appeared in Variant Lit, Saw Palm: Florida Literature and Art, and other publications. Her poetry manuscript, Hotline Bimbo, was selected as a Semifinalist for the 2023 Berkshire Prize for a First or Second Book of Poetry by Tupelo Press. She is the Vice President and Senior Editor of the recently launched independent literary press, Purple Ink.
Madison earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a specialization in Literary Study and a minor in Creative Writing from Saint Leo University in 2020, where she was an editorial assistant at the Sandhill Review. She has been twice accepted for residencies at the Vermont Studio Center. She has been invited to read her poems at the Bonnier Gallery in Miami and Tombolo Books in St. Petersburg, FL. She was a featured poet at Miami-Dade County’s Downtown Main Library for their Lunchtime Poetry and Jazz author series. She was an Assistant Program Coordinator for Miami Book Fair 2021 and 2022. She taught a virtual workshop offered by Miami Book Fair in 2023 for Miami Dade College students on how to run a college literary magazine. She also worked with O'Miami in 2023 for their Meet a Poet Micro-residency at Books and Books in Coral Gables, FL, and provided individual poetry consultations to Miamians seeking feedback on their writing. During her time as a graduate student at FIU, she taught undergraduate students Writing and Rhetoric and Creative Writing: Forms and Practices as a TA and Adjunct Lecturer.
